Group Update 3

Points: 20
Due date: Friday, April 23 @ 11:55 p.m.
Resources: Content Analysis lecture, Coding Sheet example
Individual or Group?: Group
Turn in instructions: (1) Coding Sheet (Excel/Google Sheets/Numbers spreadsheet); (2) Thematic Analysis (Word/Google Doc/Pages document)

Each research team finds a medium (e.g., TV, movie, newspapers, social media), and conduct a Content & Thematic Analysis of the medium of your choice on themes and content related to your semester topic.

This is not a full research paper. I just want you to have some practice doing content & thematic analysis.

Content Analysis: Each person will analyze a different piece of content. For example, if your topic is interactions in the workplace, one person can analyze an episode of The Office, another person can analyze social media interactions between a boss (e.g., Jim Gash) and the employees on social media (e.g., me). More examples are listed below. Your coding sheet should have at least 7 codes.

Thematic Analysis: Based on those codes, each person will come up with a theme that emerged. In approximately 250 words, define that theme and cite at least 2 example of that theme.

Examples:

  1. Semester topic: Stereotypes in sports
Content and Thematic Analysis of Monday Night Football (what themes might be used a lot? Tenets of masculinity, how white players and Black players are described, stereotypes based on (race, position, etc.), attributes (“composure,” “clutch,” etc.)
  2. Semester topic: Biases in media
Content and Thematic Analysis of the nightly news (what themes/stories are given the most air time? And when are they mentioned and what images (e.g., mug shots vs. candids) are used?)
  3. Semester topic: Workplace interactions
Content and Thematic Analysis of The Office (what are the demographics of the prominent characters? Who talks to who? Who has power? What stereotypes and societal norms fuel jokes?)

Compile on a Microsoft Word, Pages, or Google Document, then export as a PDF once finished.
